DID YOU KNOW THAT GAUDI WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL SAGRADA FAMILIA ARCHITECT?

Living next to Sagrada Familia is a privilege from any point of view. In this article we will talk about Gaudi and how he got the leadership of this project which has become a mythical construction, although he’s not its first architect.

First Architect; even though all of us know Antonio Gaudi as the main creator of the Sagrada Familia, it was Francisco de Paula del Villar, the first architect whom was in charge of this beautiful temple in 1882.

A few months later from the begging of the construction, Villar started to have discrepancies with the sponsors, and therefore, decided to leave the construction’s leadership.

Gaudi was a Catalan architect known worldwide for its unique and characteristic architectural language. By the time Villar withdrew from the construction of the Sagrada Familia, was when Gaudi became part of the project and changed the design radically, adding his personal style. Curiously, he died when a tram run over him on June 10th of 1926, as he was walking, as every night, to the Sagrada Familia to supervise its construction.

Sponsors: the architect was faithful to the belief that it was necessary to take profit of some professionals in order to achieve flawless results. That’s why he surrounded himself of the best craft professionals such as sculptors, ceramists and smiths.

Moreover, he was helped by other architects and professionals, such as Franscesc Berenguer I Mestres, who left his architectural studies to work with him, becoming his right hand.

Gaudi trusted to Dòmenec Sugrañes I Gras, the calculations of the project. Once Gaudi died, he became the first architect of the project.
Brief story of the Sagrada Familia; Josep Maria Bocabella I Verdeguer was the developer of the idea of creating a temple devoted to the family. In 1881 and thanks to different donations, the association created by him, bought a 12.800 square meters field. From that moment, one of the most important projects of Barcelona started.

Today, it has been built almost a 70% of the basilica, and its completion is due at 2026.
